Rel 265 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Amen, Sadducees, Essenes
Document Summary
Pay attention to the following accounts, because they might be questions on an exam. Verse 19: now this was john"s testimony when the jewish leaders (judeans/jews) in jerusalem sent priests and levites to ask him who he was. John is called as a witness, and the person writing is writing as though he is reporting, taking the minutes of a trial. All we know is that he baptized jesus. We don"t know much about john the baptist. The gospel writer here is giving us a little more about john. Many scholars think if you look closely, how come jesus is baptized by some- one, because in the act of baptism, john"s baptism is a baptism of repentance. Those who came to him, recognized him as this great prophet, and they came in order to be baptized by him. John had several disciples and students as well.
