NURS 231 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Nursing Process, Imrad
231 module 2: understanding the research processes and reading and critiquing
research articles.
Problem focused comes out of clinical practice.
Assembled information – ex. Incidence reports
Most reliable evidence is disciplined research ex. RNAO best practiced guidelines
Scientific methods closely related nursing process.
Worldview/paradigm that affects research: positivist paradigm and constructivist
paradigm.
• Positivist paradigm looks at variables between two things (objective)
quantitative ex. What are the outcomes of using patient controlled patient
controlled analgesia? Would more likely to ask a PICO question
• Constructivist paradigm: trying to construct knowledge with participants (it
is subjective) qualitative ex. What is the experience with children with
ADHD? Or you can look at the patients experience using patient controlled
analgesia? Is more likely to as a PS questions.
• Sometimes there is a mixed method approach if more than one person is
working on the study and that is when they use qualitative and quantitative
methods in one study.
Qualitative Context- bound means – you are seeing people in their own environment
Quantitative has a strict protocol before you stat the study. Prediction and control
can only be done with quantitative studies.
Qualitative is emergent and identification is only qualitative. Why is that? It will help
identify health issues because you are asking questions and getting patients point of
views
Phases of quantitative research
Phase 1: the conceptual phase
1. The formulating and delimiting the problem
2. Reviewing the related literature
3. Undertaking clinical fieldwork
4. Defining the framework/developing conceptual definitions
5. Formulating hypotheses
Phase 2: the design and planning phase
1. Selecting a research design
2. Developing intervention protocols
3. Identifying the population
4. Designing the sampling plan
