NURS 209 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Soft Palate, Snoring
Student Name: Jessica Plummer and Brae Greencorn Date: November 3rd, 2017
Problem # 1
General Goal: Readiness for enhanced sleep
Predicted Behavioral Outcome Objectives(s):
The Patient will show evidence of having an improved sleep pattern on the day of care.
Nursing Intervention/Strategies Rationale
1. Obtain sleep history
2. Implement a regular nap schedule
3. Explore medications
4. Assess nutrition
1. To identify specific personal and
environmental factors that may be
depriving the client of the amount of
sleep needed for optimal function
(Ladwig, 2017, p.685).
2. To compensate for sleep deficiency
whenever severely restricted seep
amounts cannot be avoided (Ladwig,
2017, 685).
3. Medications can be implemented to
enhance sleep patterns. (Ladmig, 2017,
p.687)
4. Improved nutrition can have a positive
effect on clients sleep patterns, for
example limit caffeine intake (Ladwig,
2017, 685).
Evaluation: Summarize patient progress toward outcome objectives:

Discription of medical issue:
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a condition where the sleep is interrupted due to temporary
obstruction of the airway by the soft palate, base of the tongue, or both collapsing against the
pharyngeal wall. If the obstruction happens for longer than 30 seconds it results in decreased oxygen
saturation and broken sleep. People with OSA always feel tried even though they are sleeping the
right amount. Symptoms include: heavy snoring, chronic daytime fatigue, a sore throat, and headache
when an OSA patient wakes up. (Giddens, 2017, p.101)
