How do you define it?
The process of enabling people to increase control over their health and its
determinants and thereby improve their health
Can be done by:
• Education on ways people can improve their health
• Awareness of the resources
• And involved all of the levels of health that involved multiple interventions
Determinates of health:
• Employment working conditions
• Biology and genetic endowment (cannot control)
• Personal health practices and coping skills
• Income and social status
• Social support networks
• Social environments
Social justice: means more equality in what people need access to. Social justice is
access to resources
Genetics does not over trump your health practices.

Health promotion has evolved to include individual health behaviors and underlying
determinants of health. Enabling people to increase control over their health and its
determinants and thereby improving their health
Levels of health promotion:
• Individual
• Interpersonal – social network (can enable or be a barrier)
• Organizational – resources within the organization
• Community
Health promotion values
• Empowerment- enabling them to take control. May be by education, and give
them resources
• Inclusion
• Social justice and equity – people are given equal access (equal doesn’t mean
the same)
