Stopped painting in his old style, tended more towards impressionism. When does impressionism, doesn"t do the typical simple things; makes complex paintings of complex scenes. Popular middle class bar with lots of entertainment. We are in the place of the man in the top hat. We are at a weird angle, but other things are at different angles. If we are looking straight on, her reflection shouldn"t be so visible. Different posture in mirror than in real life; the two disagree with each other. Could be her own thoughts being reflected; she looks like she"s dreaming, and her reflection shows the perfect engaged hostess she dreams of being. We can"t trust what we"re seeing; not typical message of impressionism, which usually shows a subjective but true reality. Some artists dislike impressionism and decide to change their style. Roger fry (critic) begins to see a new style of painting, and dubs it post-impressionism. Thought that impressionism lacked structure ; too amorphous.
