Namibia: Citizens Losing Patience Over German Slowness to Act On Genocide Claims
Tens of thousands of Herero and Nama people were killed between 1904 and
1908 during the colonial takeout by the Germans.
Anger is slowing building in Namibia over the inaction and lack and of progress
of apology and reparations for the genocide after three years.
When questioned, the foreign ministry is always met with a standard response that
the position papers with the detailed claims are both classified. No media
statement has followed either.
Many critics believe that Germany wants to put the issues on the back burner and
have it forgotten.
In addition, even many members of the German parliament do not know where
the progress now stands.
Many are in favour of the negotiations to take take place in public in order for it
to progress.
Traditional Herero and Nama leaders have long criticized the Namibian
government as being too soft on Germany, thus contributing to the slow
negotiations.
The German federal government claims they have a “big interest in concluding
negotiations as soon as possible. However it is important that it takes as much
time as needed. It is about finding an outcome in Namibia that is acceptable to the
government but also approved by the people” thus the reasoning behind why it
has taken so long.
