Public sphere was never intended to be taken up by women and people of colour; this was claimed and turned around by these groups. New discourses that emerge alongside things like pamphlets, newspapers, novels, sentimental ideas, etc: pamphlet culture was linked to things like journalism that led to things like democracy. 16th century; publishing comes deeply associated with things like the newspaper: funding becomes an issue and we see emergence of advertising, uncle tom"s cabin; had to direct claim to people she was writing about. Asked how we define failure when we define radical publishing projects: market can be really effective tool for social change, markets are good at finding audiences, feminism is a good example, market success becomes sign of progress.
