PSYC 363 Lecture 4: PSYC 363 WK4 Stereotypes, Discrimination and Prejudice
Document Summary
Belief about the shared characteristics of members of a group. Assigning these characteristics to individual group members. Social psychologists are generally interested in stereotypes that are part of the social fabric of a society, shared by the people within that society . Categorization is required to organize our world. Eg things i eat for dinner, for watching tv, put in my smoothie etc. We do the same thing with groups of people (social categorization) Stereotypes are beliefs about the shared characteristics of members of a group . Stereotypes are cognitive shortcuts that help us organize and understand our social world (help us to know what to expect from people, and guide behaviors toward them) Stereotypes are normal: like all beliefs, forming and holding beliefs about groups is an automatic (normal) cognitive process. Can be evaluatively positive, negative, or neutral. Can be held about the ingroup and ourselves (self-stereotypes) Stereotypes gone wrong: can be inaccurate.
