Jails: maximum security facilities that house persons whose lives are in a state of major disruption but because individuals stay for a short time, programs and services are limited. Federal government has jurisdiction over prisons, institutions that house persons serving sentences of 2 years or more; have more services and programs available in prisons than in jails; can be low, medium, or high security.
