Document Summary
Psyc 241 dissociative and somatic symptom and related disorders. Dissociative disorders = involve severe disturbances of identity, memory and consciousness. People with this disorder feels as though they have become separated from their body and are observing themselves from the outside e. g. the sense of unreality can extend to other sensory experiences and behaviour. In contrast to depersonalization, derealization is characterized by the feeling that the external world is real and strange. Depersonalization and derealization experiences by themselves do not indicate a disorder. Transient (lasting a short time) depersonalization or derealization reactions are fairly common. The symptoms of depersonalization-derealization disorder are persistent or recurrent, cause considerable distress and interfere with social relationships and job performances. The disorder occurs most frequently in adolescents and young adults, hardly ever in people older than 40. The disorder comes on suddenly and tends to be long lasting.
