Research design : the outline, plan, or strategy used to investigate. Purpose - control for unwanted variation & suggests how data will be research problem statistically analyzed. O = students" reading measured at beginning of school year, x = new reading curriculum throughout school year, o = students" reading measured at end of school year. Group that does not get iv or gets some standard value. Serves as a source of comparison to experimental group. Controls for rival hypothesis - holding ev [extraneous variable] constant. Experimental group: group of participants that receives treatment condition that is intended to produce an effect. Between-participants designs (within groups): different groups exposed to different levels of iv & are randomly assigned: different people in groups & exposed to different experimental conditions, these groups are also called randomized designs, posttest-only control-group design. Use of control group eliminates most threats to iv. Vs. nonequivalent posttest-only design [this one has random assignment]
