Principles can be used to figure out where child is in terms of maturation & development. Maturation - hard-wired by genetic coding you come into world w/ When talking about maturation, assuming there are no teratogens, enough nutrition, genetic coding fairly stable. Development - what happens in interaction b/w maturation & nature. E. g. if child not ready to walk, trying to force child to walk may slow down process. Really changed perspective on cognitive development in profound ways. Thought that children develop through sequence of stages, sequence was invariant. Doesn"t matter where you are in world, sequence is about the same. Pointed out there is big difference b/w adults & children. Noted that knowledge not as simple an idea as facts or things like that. We need to have theory of knowledge better explaining how we learn things.
