May not have any consciousness of being awaken. When a lot of important hormones secreted. Stage 3 & 4 called deep sleep stages. 1, 2, 3, 4, 3, 2, rem. Associated w/ high frequency beta waves found typically in people fully awake. Even though beta waves exist, body paralyzed. Startle awake of child w/ terror and sometimes scream. If left alone, child calms down w/o any awareness. Lots of children will have nightmares that are repetitive. Most of drugs used have long term consequences. When people fall into stage 4 sleep immediately. Seems to be associated w/ dopamine receptors. If people suffering from this, if frightened in dream, can lash out. Medical consequences where ventilator used - reversed. Circadian theories - sleep evolved b/c it has survival value.
