Document Summary

Governments, teachers, institutions, etc. all have their own philosophies. A philosophy, in this sense, is a statement of the meaning, the most basic goals, of what one does and the ultimate reasons one does it. The 3 major areas of philosophy are not really separate. We cannot ask what the world is like without wondering about what we can know about the world, and vice versa. In discussing values, we soon ask ourselves whether values are part of reality- a metaphysical question. This class focuses on metaphysics and epistemology. In philosophy, we often pursue the most basic questions. The reason for this is that philosophers, being lovers of wisdom, do not give up on a question just because it is hard. We strive to get as much of an answer as we can- to at least nd out where the limited of out understanding lie.
