Document Summary

What"s (cid:373)issi(cid:374)g: gender not equal to women. Gender (in)equality in health concerns both women and men: all societies are divided to along the lines of sex and gender. But women and men are not homogenous groups: gender is experienced by women & men simultaneously with their experiences of class, race, sexual orientation and other forms of social difference. Equality = sameness: giving everyone the same thing it only works if everyone starts from the same place. Equity = fairness: access to same opportunities we must first ensure equity before we can enjoy equality. We need to ask: how are women as a group affected differently than men, how are different groups of women affected differently, how does gender intersect with other sdoh. Ideology of femininity = a good woman is characterized by dependence/deference , purity, caretaking, and emotionality (irrationality) Ideology of masculinity = a man is self-reliant, strong, an achiever , non-emotional, rational actor: dichotomous relationship.
