Chapter 6 ethnicity and health: social and cultural factors. There are now over 200 ethnic origins in. The social and cultural construction of health and illness: health and illness are social constructions not objectively defined (3 dimension of social model of health & illness, week 3, health care vary over time and across cultures. Some members have more power than others to define health and illness the custodians of so- called legitimate medical knowledge. The structure of health-care system (hospitals) reflects the dominance of this model. It locates these medical experts in positions of power. Cultural understandings and the structure of health care both play important parts in determining how health and illness are approached by different groups of people. Racialized group visible minorities: certain groups are treated as inferior by the dominant group. Healthy immigrant effect: when immigrants first arrive in canada they are in better health than native-born.
