HSCI 140 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Ben Goldacre, Vitamin A, New York Attorney General
Document Summary
Authority=how do we know if something is good for us or bad for us. We need to study real human people to get a more relevant result and conclusion. The problem with the experiment was that it was not controlled. Placebo can also play a part in the progress of the students. Industry funded trials are 4 times more likely to get better results than independently funded trials. We cannot make decisions or conclusions with the absence of evidence. It is unethical the way the practitioners are not using the drug at the correct level of illness. One of the main points is the publication of bias. Timing and patience is important for the study and the result. Authors: it is helpful to know the authors background or group making the study, industry puppets=check on the bottom of paper for public interest. Abstract: most of the important stuff is in the abstract.
