HSCI 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Microglia, Dendrite, Multiple Sclerosis
Document Summary
Allows for communication b/w cells through sensory input, integration of data & motor output. Cns: brain & spinal cord, integrates incoming info & coordinates all voluntary/involuntary functions. Pns: ganglia & nerves that branch from cns, keeps cns in contact with rest of body, somatic nervous system. Receives sensory info & directs voluntary movements: autonomic nervous system. Parasympathetic nervous system- adjusts bodily functions during rest. Protection of cns: bones of skull & vertebral column, 2 connective tissue membranes that form the meninges. Meningitis (inflammation of meninges) is caused by bacteria & viruses & can lead to encephalitis (inflammation of brain: cerebrospinal fluid. Nourishment & waste removal: blood-brain barrier. Formed by tight junctions b/w cells in walls of capillaries supplying cns. Protects cns by selecting substances that can enter cerebrospinal fluid from blood. Inhibits many potentially life-saving, infection-fighting, tumor-suppressing drugs that re not lipid soluble from reaching brain tissue.
