Two superpowers (soviet union and united states) arose in the aftermath of the second world war. Europe was split into western and eastern. Soviet union in the east and the presence and pressure of united states in the west. European common market emerges in the west and socialist bloc in the east. There were no peace treaties signed at the end of wwii. Allied powers began to fall apart resulting in open conflict. Two ideologies against each other: communism and capitalism. Soviet union wanted control over eastern europe to compensate for defeating hitler. Churchill and stalin negotiated the countries they would be getting of those that were being liberated. It was important for the soviets to maintain control because they had suffered so many losses in the war. Created sympathetic peoples republics using diplomatic pressure, political infiltration and military power.
