Noreen: hired girl who helps vanessa"s family & introduces vanessa to a different world of superstition & fundamentalist christianity ( a bird in the house ) Birdie: only name given to grandmother connor"s caged canary that occasionally sings & is kept by grandfather connor after her death. Chris: vanessa"s older cousin who lives in his own fantasy world that includes magical horses ( horses of the night ) Uncle roderick: ewen mcleod"s younger brother, killed in ww1 & revered by his mother, who asks to name new baby after him.
