ENGL 101W Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Jonathan Safran Foer
Document Summary
Extremely loud and incredibly close"s rendition in the form of a film was quite a success due the numerous subtle differences within the film. Some parts of the novel were portrayed differently in the film, while others were not shown in the film at all. For example, oskar said that if [he] could have chosen, [he] would have chosen [his mother] (p. 88) to pass away in place of his father, resulting in having his mother leaving the room where they were arguing silently. In the film, however, the mother and son are having a very violent verbal argument in the meantime, and the mother agrees that she should have died instead of his father. Another difference between the novel and the movie was that the renter , which is oskar"s grandfather, persuades him to take the subway instead of mr. black which happened in the film but not the novel.
