ENGL 101W Lecture 6: Disgrace Analytic Entry

Document Summary

In the novel disgrace, sexual intercourse is depicted several times with or without consent. Without these sexual scenes, the story would not have had the same impact of the readers as it would have been missing intenseness and maturity. If david and melanie were known to have simply had a fling at school, which is still considered inappropriate and worthy of being punished for, the novel would have lost its taste. David seems to have solved the problem of sex rather well (p. 1) and repeatedly has sex with different individuals near the beginning of the story. All of the scenes were very detailed and sensual, describing everything that is happening between the two individuals having sex. Coetzee begins to ease in the readers by describing david"s first sexual encounter with soraya in the novel: he strokes her honey- brown body, unmarked by the sun; he stretches her out, kisses her breasts; they make love (p. 1).
