Orientalism the way that the west has seen the orient or the middle east & vice versa. Edward said, orientalism (1978): a western conception of the middle east as exotic, contradictory other", a western projection onto the middle east. Constructs orientals as cruel, decadent, lazy, irrational, clever, mysterious, natural, sensual, seductive, feminine, timeless, backward, etc. The oriental is irrational, depraved, (fallen, childlike, different"; this the european is rational, virtuous, mature, normal". (said, 40) [orientalism is] a western style for dominating, restructuring, and having authority over the orient (said, 22) Marjane seen as the other : sexualized oriental. As irrational (stupidity/cunning): (pg 177 & 220) Problems with demand for realistic portrayals: positive stereotypes. Construction of the west in upper-middle-class iran. Coming of age novel; novel of formation. Focuses on: a representative individuals"s growth (cut off) Features: intellectual, psychological, moral grouting of representative individual, quest narrative: search for meaning.
