Crim 380 - lecture 5 - personal cyber-crimes: cyberstalking, cyberbullying, fake news. Nearly 43% of children have experienced cyberbullying. 1 in 4 has had it happen more than once. 70% of students report seeing frequent bullying online. Over 80% of teens use cell phone regularly, making it most common medium for cyberbullying. 68% of teens agree that cyberbullying is serious problem. Number one reason young ppl did not tell adults about being bullied - fear of losing access to internet. Online distribution of alleged gang rape photos when 15. Moved & switched schools a number of times to try to get away . In response, nova scotia introduced cyber-safety act to deal w/ cyberbullying. Allowed victims to seek protection, sue persons. Dec. 2015 - struck down as violation of charter. Police will not deal w/ cyberbullying unless has criminal element. Bullying - imbalance of power where bullies take advantage & hurt victim.
