Equal amounts of dna from each parent. But not equal amounts of everything else!! Egg is 195,000 x bigger than sperm! Sperm / eggs brings dna - and everything else needed for life! Mitochondria powerhouse energy provider of the cell. All mitochondria in a person come from first mitochondria in zygote from mother. No shuffling of the dna, so it"s always the same. So all mtdna in a person are identical to their mother, brothers and sisters, grandmother, etc. Same throughout maternal line and can identify to that family group so it"s class evidence. Found in hair shaft, whereas nuclear dna you need that white dot at the end of hair shaft. Easier to recover from very old sources. Good for closed population e. g. plane crash.
