General types of examination: autopsy attendance, gunshot residue sampling, reconstructions. Tool = any hard object that leaves a mark in a softer object. Tool marks: may be an actual tool: ex. Tool pressed into object: no movement involved. Can eliminate but cannot identify to a single source. Tool mark may not include the entire tool. Width of blade, shape of blade; pliers, width of teeth and distance between teeth; different sized axe heads. Whether or not the patterns are indeed unique. Marks at the end of a chisel; marks on the sides of a chisel. Comparison: must compare like to like, never place suspect tool in the mark (damages possibility)
