Document Summary
T test shared 1 thing in common - involved comparison of means between 2 groups. Anova best thought of as an extension of t tests. Like t tests, anova starts by comparing differences in means between groups. Anova= grouping variable has more than 2 categories. Spread of the data around the mean for each groups. Based on these 2 estimates of variability, you can draw conclusions about the population means. Spread of data around the mean are roughly the same. Are those difference in group means, are they real differences? ation. Null hypothesis: the population means for all groups is the same. There are no differences between group means scores on the dependent variable. Note: the alternative hypothesis does not state which group differences are significant. Called one-way because it utilizes 1 grouping variable. Variable used to form groups is often referred to a factor. Researchers want to determine which of the 3 treatment programs is best at reducing recidivism.
