Roles in court process: judge and sometimes jury, crown attorney, court administration, court reporter, sheriff, can have more than one. Responsibility differs: provincially appointed crown counsel are responsible for preparing cases that are criminal code offenses, federally appointed crown counsel responsible for other federal statutes like drug offenses. Nunavut, nwt, crown councils are federally appointed and in charge of both criminal code and federal statutes. Crown activities: advise police, prepare for trial, negotiate pleas, develop strategies, manage witnesses, argue bail conditions, recommend sentences, appeal sentences. Circuit court work: little case prep time. Right to retain counsel: must be informed of right at the time of offense, must be permitted to contact a lawyer before giving a statement. Toll free number for duty council if one does not have a lawyer. America will appoint a council if one cannot afford it.
