Criminology 131: chapter 1: the foundations of criminal justice. A fundamental component of the criminal justice system is the rule of law: rule of law: the requirement that governments, as well as individuals, be subjected to and abide by the law. Justice is delivered timely by competent, ethical and independent representatives and neutrals who are of sufficient number have adequate resources and reflect the makeup of the communities they serve. Essence of the rule of law is that no one person is above the law. The rule of law can be traced back to the english magna carta o. Issued by king john of england in june 1215. The magna carta held many passages that spoke of judicial procedures. The magna carta and other documents provided the basis of the rule of law. The rule of law became the foundation of english law, and the canadian legal system.
