Most 10 offences adult court 2013-14: impaired driving, theft, fail to comply with order, common assault, breach of probation (court order, major assaults, uttering threats, drug possession, mischief, fraud. Judges are elected, have to play a political game (make decisions so they will be elected in the next election) 4 levels of court deals with criminal cases. Hear young offenders / provincial statute violations cases. May preside over preliminary inquiries (opportunity for defence to hear some case against the accuses and crown decides whether or not if there is enough evidence to start a trial) Departure from adversarial approach problem-solving & team response. Emphasize dialogue (group of teams working together -- help prevent from recidivism ) Community courts [downtown east side] (new approach to addressing crime in our community) Offenders normally assigned for service hours to help ppl get treatment from their addiction.
