Notes theories that scholars are using to interpret the emerging mobile society. The mobile society has only recently developed into a focus of academic study. For example, in just 14 years, half of the population of the u. s. could access some form of mobile technology. But while the rapid diffusion of mobile infrastructures is important, it does not in itself constitute a shift in the nature of society. As campbell 2013 writes, we need to dig deeper than adoption rates to identify distinctive characteristics of the technology that provide grounds for theoretical arguments about its role in social change (p. 9). For our purposes, this involves exploring how the mobile revolution is (re)shaping our institutions, cultures and social relations.
