CMNS 322 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Docufiction, Mockumentary, The War Game
Document Summary
Multiplicity of forms that negotiate or blur a boundary between reality and fiction. Identify a problem: truth/reality is not guaranteed by any form, factual or otherwise. Expositional documentary: builds on an argument about the social world: considered most difficult documentary. Observational documentary: purports to stand by and watch without intervening; ability to be there" lends credibility. Interactive documentary: relies on interviews with witnesses and experts, often in conjunction with observational and archival footage. Reflexive documentary: questions documentary"s ability to represent truth while nevertheless attempting to add some form of subjective truth to the subject: shows sub consciousness, becoming more and more dominant. Interesting because they criticize and question documentary, they recuperate it: cane toads is a reflexive documentary. Conscious self-awareness (1930s: people are aware of what documentaries are) Exhaustion (1050s: documentaries that were solidified in the 30s and 40s became exhausted; documentary becomes ripe for parody, mock documentaries start becoming a thing.
