BPK 305 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Matrix Metalloproteinase, Foam Cell, Fibrous Cap
Document Summary
> migrate to intima (usually don"t have smooth muscle in the intima) > proliferate and secrete extracellular matrix: cytokines and growth factors cause vsm proliferation and migration, secretion of extracellular matrix proteins produce a tough fibrous cap, lays overtop of the plaque to keep it contained (at first) Plaque formation travel in the blood: positive feedback = will keep making the problem worse. 3: plaque becomes calcified and brittle = easily broken, plaque will eventually rupture and cause thrombosis, with acute coronary thrombosis -> there is no longer much space left in the vessel for blood to flow. Induces hypercholesterolemia -> changes in liver to produce high levels of cholesterol: 3) inflammation or infection, components of infection can increase cytokine levels, may increase endothelial expression of adhesion molecules, more sticky = easier for monocytes to stick. Lifestyle -> most effective: diet, decrease ldl:hdl ratio. 4: decrease intake of saturated fats (ex. animal fats, palm oil, etc solid at room temp)
