Organisms may be single celled organisms or multicellular organism: bacteria; amoeba. Purpose of cell division: for growth of organisms and development, repair of damage (tissues > skin cells, to produce genetically identical cells (mitosis) Animal type cells: cells that divide very frequently (everyday) (skin, mouth, intestine > millions of cells dividing) 2: cells that do not divide (nerve cells) Infrequently divide (once a year basis) (liver cells) Purpose to create a new identical cell. i. G1 first gap phase (7-9 hours long: time where cell is preparing for mitosis. G2 second gap phase (4-5 hours long) ii. iii: m mitotic phase (2-3 hours long) Cell cycle between interphase and mitosis depending on the bodies need. Course of 24 hours to complete a cycle for frequently dividing cells. Signals that can start or stop the cell cycle.
