The nervous system is divided into principal systems: The central nervous system (cns) consisting of the brain and spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system (pns) with 31 pairs of spinal nerves and 12 pairs of cranial nerves. The autonomic nervous system (ans) consisting of sympathetic and parasympathetic branches: sends and receives signals from smooth muscle, cardiac muscle and glands (viscera) The somatic division: sensory component receives signals from skeletal muscles, joint structures and receptors in the skin; motor division sends signals to skeletal muscles. Primary functions are receiving and processing sensory information and creating appropriate responses to be relayed to muscles and glands.
