Document Summary
History of survey-newman: grew within positivist areas, connected to census-gov collecting on characteristics of entire population, used to conscript, assigning representatives, allocate funds or assess property for taxation. In social sciences: used for social reform to understand effects of industrialization & urbanization, more descriptive & did not use scientific sampling, mostly action oriented, early leaders--- janes addams. Interviews are difficult to arrange due to conflicting schedules with researcher & respondent: through phone interview, internet opinion polls, & questionnaire, categories of questions asked, eg: behaviours, attitudes, beliefs, & opinions, characteristics, expectation, self- classification, & knowledge. Identify the sample: ask same question to sample, measure many variables, test many hypothesis simultaneously, analyse associations among variables. *survey sometimes called correlational because the researcher can"t manipulate conditions in an experiment. Customer satisfaction surveys: easiest to use a questionnaire, pare down number of questions to most essential items you want to measure.
