Week 6 class act: dress & social prestige. Groups of people that share similar levels of certain characteristics. Cask system you are born into it and you die in that system. Weber"s three class system: stratification is the interplay among three components of inequality: wealth, prestige, and power (max weber, 1921) This multidimensional ranking relates to a person"s socio-econmic status (income + education + occupation) The ability to change one"s social position (up or down) over time. The great gatsby curve (to map social mobility) Racism and sexism based on social class. Responses to the poor: blaming the victim, blaming the system. Structural functionalist perspectives: emile durkheim"s organic solidarity. In the modern world, we have to be interdependent on other groups of people. His idea of social class is based on looking back at history. Lifestyle is shared, beliefs are shared: davis-moore thesis. Symbolic-interactionalist perspectives: thorstein veblen"s theory of the leisure class.
