American studies on family violence begin and end with statistics, which is negative because they only look at reported violence. Sexual abuse in statistics only applies to virginal children, not women, because the perpetrator can explain it away as saying the women likes rough sex. Women now expect to be treated in negative ways because it has been constructed as not abusive; verbal, emotional and psychological abuse are seen as normal. Financial abuse is the most used form of abuse in upper middle class women; being excluded from money matters and bank accounts. Verbal, emotional and psychological abuse leads to not asking about finances, financial abuse. For children abuse = neglect, and for elders = financial and neglect. For children it is neglect because children are minors; can"t hold a bank account without a guardian, make personal, medical and financial decisions, rent an apartment, etc.
