There are symbols and symbolic interactions in sport, media, and entertainment. Sports and the mass media enjoy a very symbiotic relationship in american society. Both also affect the audience as well as the advertising market & sponsors: ie. consider relationship between corporations and their spokespersons. They reflect social values that can extend from individuals to collective values and generally accepted values like the belief in effort, productivity, competition, & the logic of capitalism: the survival of the fittest. Sports are integrative and image building elements for individuals, segments, of societies, and entire societies. They act as unifying forces and strong factors of socialization (think going out to bar for sports game), improving the social acceptance of athletes. Sports can also support social and cultural identities and the construction of national identities.
