Essential theories posit identity as a fundamental, unchanging core of meaning that precedes and transcends culture and politics. Social constructive theories emphasize the cultural and political circumstances in which identities are produced. To say that identity is (cid:494)socially constructed(cid:495) means. It is not natural, not biological fact, not (cid:494)in(cid:495) an individual body. Identity is made in culture and revealing of culture. Identity is achieved through actions and interactions. Empowerment is thus discursively figured in at least two ways in this historical moment: as media visibility, market demographic. Difference and inequality are converted into representational issues only. Social problems of racism, gender inequality, etc. are treated as if they have been solved through representation. Post feminism: expresses some combination of two assumptions: feminism has achieved everything it set out to do, feminism is an angry, strident political movement that is divisive (anti-men) and anti-pleasure. Female freedom and ambition appear to be taken for granted, unreliant on any past struggle.
