Privacy protection of personal identity and info (nothing without consent) Confidentiality- when the researcher can identify a participant but commits not to do so publically. Can observe in public spaces without consent because people can reasonably be expected to be observed. Research should enhance capacity to maintain cultures, languages and identities. To discover and describe patterns of social life. To get more of a complete pic of a groups way of life. Folkway: a practice, custom or belief shared by the members of a culture. Has explicit rules outlining what behaviour to observe and be recorded. Observe without interaction from a distance semi participant observer. Develop theory from analysis of patterns, themes, common categories. Strengths: if done well, it can provide more valid measures than surveys (they may say one thing in a survey but do another in real life) Very rich data sources, reaches beyond the surface. Being there/seeing can be very important or insightful.
