Lecture 1: stress & health: models of stress. Stress can be pos/neg but generally has a negative connotation. Most ppl associate stress as simply an emotional response but it"s beyond that. The model on the right is used in cbt and is a comprehensive way of looking at stress & is interactive. Our body maintains an equilibrium, ie. homeostasis, eg. In modern times, chronic stress has neg physical & mental impact. Canon"s fight/flight response: things in our environment can throw off our homeostasis. When faced w/ a dangerous situation, eg. predator, you either flee/fight. There are debates about the order of the response. Theory is criticized for lack of completeness so it has been expanded to include other ways to react to stress.
