Women are persons under the law, and can vote. Few women in positions of political and economic power. Sexual violence still at epidemic levels (rape culture) Societal definitions of femininity, masculinity, and heteronormativity remain strong. 70 cents to a dollar for white women, 67 cents to a dollar for black women. Currently liberal political party, forced together for an equal gender cabinet, Dualism: central to western thought (male/female, black/white, right/wrong) Cons: we put people in boxes we think who have similar traits. Socially acquired meaning attached to being male or female. All expected and actual thoughts, feelings and behaviors associated with masculinity and femininity. Biology and culture interest, so gender has internal action and external expected dimensions. For example, if someone calls your baby girl a baby boy they get so offended because then you start to think that you aren"t following the standard beauty or expectations for it being a girl.
