Productive language: being able to produce and communicate lang. Receptive language: should be able to understand language, symbolic system. Visual symbols (printed version of words or sign lang. aspects of different movements to represent words) Convention that certain symbol represents the same thing in each culture can understand eachother through this convention. Brits and we use some diff symbols for same thing (elevator vs. lift) Lang. was arbitrary, someone used a symbol for a concept and that become convention: rule-governed system. Rewarded/punishment behaviour: according to skinner this applies to lang. too. Reinforced behaviour when child is started to talk: get excited, give attention. Limits and conditions: too many sounds and words and rules to realistically reinforce all of them, inconsistency of reinforcement, does not account for creativity of language. Shouldn"t be making up words, only teach what you have learned: does not account for overregularizations. Child learns a rule and applies it to everything: nativist theory.
