The pattern of systematic changes and continuities that occur between conception and death. * developmentalists study orderly, patterned and enduring changes, as well as continuities that occur from the womb to the tomb . * change and continuity in three inter-related domains: (1) the physical body (2) the mind, or cognition (thinking) (3) personality and social relationships. With opaque systems, like the human mind, there are two really good ways to find out how they work: (1) take them apart. (cognitive neuro-psych) (2) watch them get put together in the first place. (developmental psychology) So, one goal of studying child development is to understand more about how minds and thoughts and behaviours work by watching them develop. Additional goals are to understand how to treat children differently as a result of what they can do and understand, and to help them develop in positive ways.
