Sensory capability: 1880s, sir francis galton proposed that intelligence stems from sensory capability. E. g. if you could detect two different scents you are intelligent. Sensory capabilities are not highly correlated with other measures of intelligence. Mental processes: 1900s, alfred binet and theodore simon developed an intelligence test focused on higher mental processes that was used to identify students needing additional academic instruction. Most experts now agree that intelligence includes higher mental processes, including abstract thinking, reasoning, understanding and judgment. General intelligence: by the 1920s several intelligence tests existed. Because these tests were all positively correlated, despite measuring different things, charles spearman proposed the existence of a general intelligence (g). Modern tests of ability and intellect tend to be positively correlated with one another.
