Psychodynamic approach is created from freud"s theory (some didn"t believe the psychoanalytic approach) Believed to be born with two instincts: life instincts: mental energy that involves sustaining life (sexual instincts- Libido: death instincts: tendencies towards aggressive and destructive behaviours towards ourselves and others. Believed no way to get rid of them, we can just control them. Structures of personality: id: the structure that contains the instincts (sexual and aggressive tendencies) It is analogous to a balloon being filled with air (it"s all about release) It is the only structure present at birth. Is unconscious and has no contact with reality. Based on the pleasure principle: ego (develops ~13-15 months): Helps the id to get satisfaction in socially accepted ways. Is reasonable and realistically evaluates the environment. Checks environment to see if it"s okay to release the impulses by id. Tries to find a compromise between id and super ego: super ego (develops ~4 years)
