Document Summary

Pol203 - politics of the environment - lecture 5: science and the environment. Plays a significant role in most modern societies. It comes with cultural authority but literacy in science is still questionable in many areas around the world. Like other forms of knowledge, science is always contested. Often preserved as statements and presented as objective fact - however in politics it is most often delegated in terms of statements. Environmental problems are revealed through science (i. e. climate change, ozone depletion and forestry management are all examples). Science inevitably plays a role in political conflicts and it is often to distinguish that role. Argues that science should present objective information about causal relationships. There is a clear separation of science and politics. However, this does not play a role in decision making, only acting on informants. Protects politics and science against undue influence from each other. Science most likely always takes the neutral role.
