Document Summary

Our original freedom is the open-endedness inherent in existence. It does not yet entail moral freedom, which involves choosing end for myself, or assuming responsibility for my freedom. Original freedom only becomes ethical when i will myself to be free: recognize that my existence has no other meaning than the meaning that i make for myself. You may feel you have no choice but to act according to a situation (soldier following orders) but you are making the choice to remain in that situation/role. Can he not choose whatever he likes and act however he like? he bears the responsibility for a world which is not the work of a strange power, but of himself (ea, c. 1) My freedom is not arbitrary; it comes with a heightened degree of responsibility. I am free means i have no one else to blame or to excuse for my own actions.
