Document Summary

Review normal regulation of blood pressure prior to class. Htn defined as systolic blood pressure equal to or greater than 140 or diastolic pressure equal to or greater than 90. Older women have a higher rates than older men. Hypertension subtype: isolated systolic hypertension: sustained elevation in sbp equal or greater than. Arterial bp= co (cardiac output)* (systematic vascular resistance svr) Cardiac output: total blood flow through the systematic or pulmonary circulation per min. C0= sv (70ml) * hr for 1 min. Svr: force opposing the movement of blood within the blood vessels. If svr is increased and co remains constant or increase, bp will increase. Regulation is a complex process involving nervous, cardiovascular, renal and endocrine function. Can be regulated by both short-term and long-term effects. Short term: effects exerted by the sympathetic nervous system and endothelium active within few seconds. Long term: renal and hormonal processes that regulate arteriolar resistance and blood volume.
